The City of Lloydminster is looking at options to reduce waste and to improve our current waste management system.
The City is distributing this survey to all households to ensure every resident has the opportunity to participate.
Please take 5 minutes to read the information in this brochure and complete the survey. YOUR IDEAS will help ensure that Lloydminster continues to be a centre of excellence in all areas – including the environment.
Please complete the survey by December 2nd 2009.
Thank You
WASTE MANAGEMENT SURVEY
Background Information
How Much Waste? • Approximately 6000 tonnes/year of residential waste • 87.5% goes to landfill; 12.5% is recycled • More than 940 kg of waste/person/year is sent to landfill including commercial waste
What are We Diverting from Landfill? The chart below shows what most residential waste looks like in Alberta (i.e. 50% of our waste is food and yard waste, 20% is paper and cardboard, etc.) and compares it to how much we (Lloydminster residents) divert from landfill by capturing that waste through recycling or other programs.
Residential Waste Diversion: Actual vs. Potential

As you can see, we’re pretty good at recycling paper & cardboard, but we capture none of the largest waste stream (organics) and not much of the plastics, glass and other waste.
How Much Could We Divert? It’s up to us and it’s up to you. Some communities have goals to reduce waste by 60%, some to reduce waste to zero. Sherwood Park increased the amount it diverts from 27% to 65% in just one year. This survey will help us decide our goals and the best programs to meet these goals.
